Principal’s News - 9 August 2024

Even though we are still very much in 2024, Term 3 is also a time when we begin planning and preparing for 2025. We are currently in the midst of 2025 teacher recruitment, student subject selections and finalising enrolments. While we are close to capacity at many year levels, we have a small number of vacancies across the College. If you or anyone you know is looking to secure enrolment for 2025, you are encouraged to contact College Registrar Annemarie Mein as soon as possible.

Blue Week

This week, our Prefects hosted Blue Week to help raise awareness of men’s mental health, including depression and anxiety. The week’s activities aimed to create positive change in the way students approach the topic of mental health, encouraging them to check in with others and reducing the stigma attached to asking for help.

On Monday, Middle and Senior Years students gathered in their PC groups to decorate blue lanterns with messages of hope and encouragement. On Tuesday, students were treated to a fundraising BBQ cooked by the Prefects. Thursday saw hundreds of blue doughnuts sold, after which students participated in tailored Wellio sessions focussed on resilience, positive psychology and growth mindsets. The Middle and Senior Years Bloke’s Chats at lunchtime provided a space for students to initiate meaningful conversations. A big thank you to the guest speakers whose speeches this morning reduced the stigma and anxiety around booking a psychologist session and provided valuable strategies on how to manage stress day to day. The highlight of the week was at lunchtime today, when our Prefects won their friendly netball match against the Loreto Student Executive, with players wearing ‘a touch of blue’. All funds raised from Blue Week activities will be sent to Beyond Blue.

School Sport SA Disability Soccer Tournament

A few Rostrevor students volunteered to facilitate the School Sport SA Disability Soccer Tournament at the FSA State Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. They assisted in a variety of ways, including playing on a team, refereeing, timekeeping, officiating, setting/packing up the equipment and most importantly, building friendships with the external students participating in the event. This was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to live out Rostrevor’s 'Man for Others' ethos and develop their confidence and leadership skills.

Mary MacKillop Pink Round Netball Match

Rostrevor’s Prefect group journeyed to Mary MacKillop College last week to participate in a netball match organised by their Student Leadership Team, raising awareness of breast cancer in support Pink Round. Congratulations to the Mary MacKillop team whose netball skills outshone those of our Prefects, with the girls’ team winning 35 to 21 in front of an animated home crowd.

Book Week

Book week is fast approaching, happening in Week 5 of this Term! Rostrevor will be celebrating with a variety of activities to encourage a love of reading in recognition of the ‘magical’ power of books. There will be a Scholastic Book Fair in the Ideas Centre from Monday to Friday before and after school from 19-23 August, with card and cash payment options available. We are also keenly looking forward to seeing the many wonderful costumes our Junior Years students are putting together for the Book Week parade! Parents and caregivers are invited to attend the Book Fair and the Book Week parade in Purton Hall at 9:00am on Friday 23 August.

Rostrevor College Centenary Book

We are excited to launch the Rostrevor College Centenary Book in celebration of the College’s 100th year. It not only captures a rich and fascinating history but celebrates our current students and community. From the 2023 whole-school photo to contemporary images of their sporting, creative and academic pursuits, the pages of this historic book commemorate the journey the College has taken and the journey that has just begun for our Rostrevor families. The photos above are just a few of many featuring current and recently graduated Rostrevor students.

The limited print run is now available for pre-order and will be ready for collection from the College or delivery in time for Father’s Day this year. Pre-order your Centenary Book HERE

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Pink Round

It was great to see students and spectators showing their support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink to Rostrevor’s co-curricular fixtures last week. Congratulations to those players who were awarded ‘Pink Round’ medals for showing both athletic skill and great sportsmanship in their games. The students pictured above are Will Marshall (First XVIII Football), Antonio Siciliano (First XI Soccer), and Josh Owade (Select XI Soccer). Below is the Year 7A Football team.

First XI Soccer vs Mercedes College

Rostrevor’s First XI are into the Grand Final! Hear from First XI Coach Jamie Lee about Wednesday’s game against Mercedes College:

Rostrevor’s First XI Football team secured their spot in next week’s Grand Final with an entertaining encounter against Mercedes in this semi-final match up. Having already produced a 5-goal thriller earlier in the season, both teams once again exhibited their attacking qualities as Rostrevor saw a 6-3 win. It was a blistering start from the Rossi boys as Vincenzo Scalzi won the ball and danced his way through Mercedes back line with the ball falling to Antonio Siciliano who comfortably slotted home. It wasn’t long before that lead was doubled as Christian Tassotti finished off an excellent team move. Thomas Mastrantuone won the ball back before a nice link up play between Christian Tassotti and Yel Akot found Joshua Zeeman who sprayed a ball out to Vincenzo Scalzi. Scalzi’s first touch took him past the defender who squared smartly for Tassotti to tap home from six yards. Rostrevor were in dreamland soon after as a smart ball from Max Koch released Vincenzo Scalzi again and this time he slotted in to continue his fine form against Mercedes College.

Mercedes gave themselves hope just before half time by pulling one back, but Rostrevor started the second half just as well as they started the first. Antonio Siciliano set Scalzi free to score his second and Rossi’s fourth. Scalzi soon completed his hat-trick easily tapping the ball in from two yards. Henry Knight rounded off the Rostrevor goal fest by curling a delightful finish over the Mercedes keeper into the far corner. Despite Mercedes College pulling two goals back late in the game, Rostrevor did enough and progress to the Grand Final.

After what has been a fantastic season for Rostrevor’s First XI boys, they now will look to compete for the Grand Final and Intercol in the next two weeks. The boys deserve all the support the Rostrevor community can muster and we hope to see you all there at next week’s Grand Final against CBC at the FSA State Centre for a 4pm kick off!

First XVIII Football vs Westminster School

Rostrevor's First XVIII won in convincing fashion against Westminster in the SAAS Blockbuster Round on Tuesday night this week at Thebarton oval. Led by acting Captain, Ned McCarthy (who impressed spectators with two opening quarter goals) the team got off to a quick start and led 5.2 - 1.0 at quarter time. Westminster fought hard and got themselves back into the contest by the end of the third quarter, still trailing to Rostrevor 9.7 - 6.5. However, Rostrevor regained ascendancy through the midfield and helped generate some quick, free flowing football which resulted in seven last quarter goals. Jack Michalanney (2 goals) continued his strong run of form since being moved in the midfield. Ned McCarthy (3 goals) led the way and helped connect the ball from defence to the forward lines with his powerful running, and was named best on ground. Jules Piro, Kristian Gould (2 goals) and Thomas Griffiths were also strong contributors. Rostrevor’s First XVIII finished with 16.9.105 to Westminster’s 7.8.50.
