Principal’s News - 15 November 2024

On Monday morning staff and students from Reception to Year 11 gathered in the Valley for our Remembrance Day ceremony. On the 11th of November each year we pause and remember those who have served and died for Australia in wars and armed conflicts. This year’s ceremony was led by Mr Shannon Simpson, with contributions and support from student leaders, Carelyn Robinson and Br John Ahern.

We were privileged to have guest speaker Simon Kelly come along to talk to students about Rostrevor’s connections to military service and stories of the First Nations people who served in the early to mid-20th century, and encouraged our day of remembrance to also be a call to action that we demonstrate collective kindness, wisdom and strength. Simon was a teacher at Rostrevor for 28 years until 2009, and was the driving force behind the plaque in the Valley which gives recognition to the Kaurna Trail.

Although neither a Veteran nor First Nations, Simon through his service to the veteran community was made an inducted member of the 9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment South Australia which served in Vietnam, and he is currently a Vice President of their Association. He is also the Education Officer and a Committee Member of Aboriginal Veterans SA.

A group of Year 9 students were invited to attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the West Tce Cemetery. As part of their attendance, students were asked to help in placing a poppy on over 4000 graves belonging to service men and women who were either killed on active duty or who passed away later in life. The boys were able to hear from guest speakers who explained the significance of Remembrance Day as part of Australia’s history.

Her Excellency the Governor of South Australia Visit

We were honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC Governor of South Australia and her husband Mr Rod Bunten to the College yesterday. They toured Rostrevor's Boarding House before sitting down with student leaders to discuss their philanthropic projects, leadership styles and plans for 2025. Her excellency shared valuable advice with our student leaders and expressed a keen interest in the day-to-day life of Rostrevor’s boarding students and the 2025 Prefects’ charity initiatives.

Summer Co-Curricular Assembly

Standout players across Rostrevor’s summer Co-Curricular teams were recognised at an Assembly this morning, with MVP and Red and Black medals distributed to students who demonstrated consistent talent or team values across the Term. Congratulations to all those award winners, and also to those students who show up every week and contribute to their team’s success. It was an absolute pleasure to witness the pride and school spirit shown by each and every student who represented the red and black this season. Names of the summer Co-Curricular award winners can be found HERE.

PE Week

Physical Education Week is celebrated across Australia in Term 4 each year. It is a week that we focus on the importance of physical activity to our health and overall wellbeing. This year, Rostrevor students participated in a range of activities designed to get them up and moving during lunchtimes, including ‘The Soccer Extravaganza’ on Monday, the longest kick competition on Tuesday, trying out the new soccer tech table on Wednesday, golf on Thursday and the badminton challenge today. Thank you to the Health and Physical Education department for putting together such a great array of activities for students.

Year 7 Transition Day

Students enrolled in Years 1-7 for 2025 were welcomed to Rostrevor on Wednesday for their Transition Day. Junior Years students joined their new peers, meeting their future teachers as they spent the morning getting to know their new school. Students joining Rostrevor in Year 7 next year were treated to a full day of activities alongside our current Year 6s, participating in an Amazing Race, a PE lesson, venturing to the Ag Farm, a science experiment and learning about circuits in the Technology Centre. We look forward to welcoming our new Years 8-12 students for their Transition Day next week.

Murial Matters Award

This week, Year 10 student Arjun Malhotra was recognised for his civic leadership in a reception at Parliament House where he was presented with the Murial Matters Award. The awards are conducted by the Minister for Education, Training, and Skills, The Hon. Blair Boyer, and the Speaker of the South Australian Parliament House of Assembly, the Hon. Leon Bignall. Following the presentation Arjun and his fellow award winners were invited to join Question Time in the House Assembly seated in the Speakers Gallery. The speaker of the House commenced by welcoming all the award recipients to the House, and they were warmly congratulated by all members of parliament.

Arjun was recognised as a committed leader both within the College and through the wider community. His nomination for the award outlines his outstanding work across his schooling, extracurricular pursuits and as an advocate in the wider community across multiple platforms.

Beekeeping at the Agriculture Farm

With the warmer Term 4 weather comes the Year 10 Beekeeping unit with a focus on honey production. The boys have learned about bee behaviour and current biosecurity threats, constructed new frames for our hives, and have been responsible for extracting honey from the hives and jarring it up. With a final yield of approximately 20 kg, all students enjoyed a taste of the final product this week.

Wildlife Safety Reminder

During springtime there are many animals on the move around Rostrevor, including many baby animals who call our expansive campus home. As such, now is also an especially important time to remember to be mindful of animals when driving on the roads around campus or through the grounds. Please slow down to let animals cross the road safely and report any injured wildlife either to College staff, Fauna Rescue SA (8289 0896) or Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue (0435 056 252). We are privileged to be able to gather as a school community in the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, next to Morialta Conservation Park, and have a responsibility to care for the wildlife that lives at and around our school.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Year 9/10 Knockout Cricket vs Gleeson

The Rostrevor Year 9/10 Knockout Cricket team delivered an impressive performance on Monday, securing a convincing victory over Gleeson College. Batting first, Rostrevor set a competitive target of 182 runs, with solid contributions throughout the lineup that showcased depth and resilience. In response, Gleeson found it challenging to keep up with Rostrevor’s disciplined bowling attack, eventually being bowled out for 79 runs. The team’s energy and commitment on the field were evident, reflecting the hard work put in during training. The next game will be against Henley High School on 18 November to make it into the final of the Knockout competition.
