Principal’s News - 8 September 2023

Congratulations to all students whose achievements were recognised at today’s Principal’s Assembly. The Palma Merenti awards recognise those students who achieved a GPA of 90 or above for the semester. These results are representative of the time, effort, growth mind set and commitment displayed by these young men and today, we proudly acknowledged their outstanding academic achievements. The students who received a ‘Man of the Camp’ award demonstrated the College ethos, spirit and values and generally had a positive impact on their peers during the recent Year 9 camp.

Rostrevor College Centenary Gala

The Centenary Gala was a wonderful way for us to gather as a community to celebrate who we are and what our College has achieved over the past 100 years. Recent and not so recent Old Collegians, past and present parents, and past and present staff dressed to the nines for the event last Saturday Night at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Congratulations to student bands - the Small Jazz Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet - on another flawless performance!

A huge thank you to the Development Team who planned and coordinated the event, and to the committee members for their valuable contributions. I’d also like to thank the emcee, Rosanna Mangiarelli, who you may know as a TV presenter from 7News Adelaide, as well as the many wonderful donors who supported the auctions. Without these people, the night wouldn’t have been such a success.

And of course, thank you to the wine sponsors: Tom Jonas (’08) from Hey Diddle Wines, Damon (’04) and Jono (’10) Koerner from Koerner Wine, and Darren Golding (’87) from Golding Wines. Their support of the event shows their commitment to Rostrevor and to our community.

The video below was premiered at the Gala, and summarizes what Rostrevor College means to our community.

Vinnie’s Winter Sleep Out

Well done to the Social Justice and Egan students who participated in the Vinnie’s Winter Sleep Out on Thursday night last week to raise awareness about homelessness in our community. With guest speakers Rebecca and Claire from St Vincent de Paul, boys were challenged to experience sleeping rough after learning more about how and why homelessness is a community issue that we need to address collectively.

Special Guests at Rostrevor

On Monday this week, we were fortunate to host morning tea for previous Headmaster Terry Hann and Br Trevor Gibbons who had travelled to Adelaide from interstate for the Gala. Old Scholar Steven Lee (’96) named his son, Tex Lee (Year 4) after Terry Hann, who made a profound and positive impact on his life as Headmaster in the 90s. It was a truly special moment on Monday when the two Texs were able to meet each other for the first time!

Year 8 STEM Excursion

Safeguarding Sunday

The Catholic Church in Australia marks Safeguarding Sunday (formerly Child Protection Sunday) on the second Sunday of September which falls at the conclusion of National Child Protection Week. It makes a commitment to practices and protocols that create and maintain safe environments for all people. The National Child Protection Week campaign this week invites all Australians to play their part in putting children’s safety first. All staff, students and families of Rostrevor College are reminded of the crucial role they play in safeguarding children in their care.

Mindful of the theme for National Child Protection Week, may we work to build and support safe communities for all people. In South Australia, the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is mandated in all schools. Key child safety messages will continue to be reinforced to students through classroom discussions and activities as a part of the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum. More information can be found HERE. Rostrevor's safeguarding policy can be found HERE.

Chess Champions

Congratulations to the Rostrevor Chess team for winning the Division 3 SA Junior Chess Competition for the second year in a row! With some students playing every week and others filling in as substitutes, all players should be proud of their prestigious award. The winning team was Connor Bohlin, Braydon Bohlin, Kalan Bohlin, Owen Tallis and Max Gouletsas, with the help from Oscar Milesi, Zai Ng and Tajveer Singh.

Small Jazz Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet Performance

Hear from Head of Arts, Peter Waterman on our students’ performance at the opening of the Centenary Gala.

The students of the Rostrevor College Music Department demonstrated their exceptional musical abilities through improvised solos, solid grooves and harmonious saxophone playing, adding a unique and personal touch to the Rostrevor College Centenary Gala. Their creativity and talent were on display for all to see, and they truly acted as outstanding ambassadors for the College, representing its rich history of musical excellence.

Under the expert guidance of Mr Greg Osman, who served as the conductor for both the Small Jazz Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet, the commencement of the historic Centenary Gala was truly unforgettable. The addition of jazz and saxophone melodies not only celebrated the college's remarkable history but also showcased the bright musical future ahead, filled with talented and dedicated individuals.

Bachar Houli Academy Match

Well done to Ayman Ismail (Year 10) and Jad El-Hosni (Year 9) for representing the Bachar Houli Australian Rules Football Academy in their match against the All-Nations team, which boasted Zayd El-Hosni (Year 8) as one of its players. Played at the West Adelaide Football club last weekend, the Bachar Houli Academy team came away with a 57 to 14 point win. The Academy was established by the Richmond Football Club legend to develop young leaders within the Muslim community through football.

Following his outstanding performance throughout the match, Ayman has been selected to represent the National Bachar Houli Academy team at the end of September, playing a match on the MCG the day after the AFL Grand Final!
