Principal’s News - 7 June 2024

Last week saw the halfway mark of the year for Year 12 students, with now only 15 school weeks left before the official last day of schooling. At the start of each year, we point out to Year 12s just how fast the year will go and it’s about now that they believe us! With the long weekend ahead, it gives Year 12s, and all students across the College, the opportunity to pause and reflect on their commitment to their learning and to set goals for the remainder of the school year.

2025 and 2026 Enrolments

We are currently finalising enrolments for 2025 and 2026. We enjoyed hosting future and prospective families this week at our Come and Try Day and Principal’s Tour. As many year levels have reached capacity for 2025, existing Rostrevor families and those interested in joining our community next year or in 2026 are encouraged to submit enrolment paperwork to College Registrar, Annemarie Mein as soon as possible.

Year 9 Camp

The Year 9 cohort have spent the past three days at one of three camps across South Australia. They have been Kayaking through Swan Reach, Bushwalking through Deep Creek Conservation Park and Mountain Biking at Tinjella Hut. The boys extended their comfort zones and built resilience as they camped and cooked their own meals on Trangias, carrying all their belongings with them. The camp was also a fantastic opportunity for students to try new experiences, gaining independence and life skills as they made memories to last a lifetime!

Loreto Pink and Green Day

Earlier this year the Rostrevor and Loreto communities said goodbye to much loved Year 7 Loreto College student Ava Lynch, who lost her short battle with cancer. Ava was well-known in our community, being the younger sister of Charles (’21) and Harrison (’23), and the daughter of Christina and Darren Lynch - Darren also being a current College Advisory Council member.

Today, Rostrevor Prefects travelled to Loreto to participate in the Pink and Green Day, an annual fundraiser this year renamed to reflect Ava’s favourite colours. Their friendly netball match against the Loreto Student Executive helped to raise money for RUN DIPG, an organisation working to improve outcomes for children with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), also known as brainstem cancer. Our community is encouraged to support this organisation through Loreto’s fundraiser HERE

Come and Try Day

Around 40 Year 5 and 6 students who are considering joining Rostrevor at Year 7 attended a Come and Try Day on Wednesday, getting a taste of what life as a Rostrevor student will be like. They got to know teachers, current students and each other as they toured the Agriculture farm, tried out the recording studio in the Music Centre, used a laser cutter to make name tags and experienced a Manchester City Football School class.

Little Rossi Learners

With over half of their visits done, the Little Rossi Learners have been having a blast getting to know their new school environment, their teachers and each other before they join A’ishah Adamo’s Reception class at the beginning of Term 3. These Mid-Year Receptions are getting a head start on their education, participating in one and a half years of Reception to ensure a smooth transition from early learning to school while laying solid foundations for their educational journeys. Today, the class learned about rainbows through an experiment with Skittles.

EREA Primary Leaders Day

Last Thursday the Year 6 Junior Leaders travelled to Christian Brothers College in the city to continue their leadership formation program. There they met the Junior Leaders from St Paul’s and CBC to participate in group discussions and games to enhance their leadership skills. The boys discussed how younger people can become changemakers and leaders within their respective communities and brainstormed ways they can work together to make an impact. These ideas will be followed up and further explored at the next EREA Junior Leaders Day in Term 3.

UniSA STEM Excursion

On Wednesday last week a group of Year 10 students ventured to UniSA to take part in a STEM workshop aimed at showcasing the different career pathways and study options available in the field. They met experts working in the industry and took part in activities exploring engineering, maths, science, defence, cybersecurity, construction management, environmental science, aviation and information technology.

The Wellbeing Show

Yesterday the Reception - Year 4 students participated in a wellbeing performance delivered by Educational Incursions. The Wellbeing Show gave students some strategies to use their logic and positive emotions when responding to their everyday environment.

Year 7 Science

Teacher Matthew Mullen’s Year 7 Science class had fun on Monday afternoon testing their inventions designed to prevent eggs from cracking when dropped from a five-metre height. The class is currently learning about the theory of forces and this week produced egg parachutes which minimised the impact of these forces. While there were a few eggs intact and a few with cracks, there weren’t any ‘splats’.

EREA Charter Renewal and Mission Strategy Forum

Edmund Rice Education Australia is reimagining how they work as an authentic overarching organisation governing EREA schools including Rostrevor, CBC and St Paul’s College. Members of our community who were unable to attend a forum in person have been invited to attend an online session to help shape the future of EREA and contribute to the renewed Charter and Mission Strategy.

Upcoming Webinar for Students: Navigating Your Post-School Plans with Confidence

Presented by Dr Michael Healy, this webinar is for students in the Senior Years (most relevant to Year 12 students) starting to make plans for after graduation.

“School is such a big part of your life; you might have mixed feelings as you approach the end of it. You might be excited about your next steps. But it’s okay if you’re not sure about your post-school plans or feeling a bit anxious or overwhelmed about it all.”

During this webinar, Dr Healy will be discussing:

  • Different kinds of post-school pathways.
  • Why it’s OK if you don’t know what you want to do.
  • Why it’s OK to change your mind.
  • Why ATAR might not be as important as you think.
  • How to research your options.
  • Who to talk to for help.

When: Wednesday 24 July, 4:30pm-5:30pm

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

First XI Soccer vs Mercedes College

Hear from First XI Coach Jamie Lee about Wednesday’s game:

The First XI served up a spectacular finish this week as a last minute goal from Vincenzo Scalzi secured yet another win for Rostrevor. Mercedes defended a 1-0 lead throughout most of the game, with Scalzi missing a penalty in the first half. Finally Rostrevor found a way through and equalised with Barnaby Wood scoring from the spot. Rostrevor pushed for a winner but were caught with men upfield, allowing Mercedes to counter attack and put themselves into the lead yet again. With 10 minutes left, Rostrevor again equalised when Henry Knight cut the ball back and Vincenzo Scalzi was there to fire in the equaliser. The excitement wasn’t over yet! In the last seconds of the game, Henry Knight weaved his way past two defenders and slipped in Vincenzo Scalzi who made up for his earlier penalty miss but smashing the ball into the top corner of the net sparking wild celebrations from the Rostrevor players who continue their winning run this season.
