Easter is both a solemn time and a time of celebration for the Catholic community, as we take time to remember Jesus's great sacrifice and resurrection. “So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead” – Luke 24:46.
Staff and students will attend a whole school liturgy in the Valley on Tuesday morning where we will come together and be reminded of the hope, renewal and new life that Easter brings.
I wish a very happy Easter to our Rostrevor community and hope you manage some down time with family and friends.
Our Year 12s journeyed to Barmera and Finnis on Monday for their last Retreat as Rostrevor students. The boys spent three days guided by staff reflecting on how they can live authentically. There was time for reflection and contemplation, and they were challenged to set goals for their remaining time at school and to be grateful for those who have and continue to support and believe in them.
Retreats are a key formation experience in the life of our students. Having this time away from our usual surroundings helps us to engage with the search for truth and come to know more deeply our authentic self and that we are loved by God.
This week, we welcomed Life Education to Rostrevor to work with our Year 7 students in a program called Respect, Relate, Connect. Whilst looking at the importance of social skills, this program specifically focusses on respecting ourselves and others, strategies to help maintain positive online and offline relationships, identifying characteristics of positive relationships and how to recognize, react to and report unwanted contact, bullying or predatory behaviours.
Our boys engaged well throughout each session and will attend follow up sessions with our College counselling team later in the year.
Mr Luke Manuel and four of his old scholar friends completed their charity ride on Friday, cycling into the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday after seven days of braving the elements. Their incredible feat of endurance has raised $39,061 – well above their goal – for the Leukemia Foundation, the Cancer Council, and the Breast Cancer Foundation. The group are hoping to tip the money raised over the $40k mark. You can still donate to the cause via their GoFundMe. What an amazing achievement by our old scholars!
Our 100th Cricket Intercol was a match where respect trumped rivalry, with both being ever-present. Well done to Sacred Heart on their 78-run win. READ MORE
Rostrevor College had a great day on the track and field at the SA Interschool Athletics competition yesterday, demonstrating outstanding team spirit and individual brilliance. As many senior students were unable to attend, the Middle Years carried the team with great determination and grit – often competing against much older athletes. Congratulations to Year 11 Thomas Griffiths who not only broke the SA School Athletics record for the Open 200m, but became the fastest 200m sprinter in the College’s history when he broke D Hogan’s 1970s record with a time of 22.39 seconds. Year 8 Spencer De Lacy broke the College’s U14 Shotput record with a throw of 13.35m and also won the Long Jump and Triple Jump in his age group. Liam Waters won the U16 Javelin and Shotput and placed 2nd in the Discus. He also finished 4th in the Open Javelin against competitors two years older than himself. Thanks go to Team Coach Mark Roberts who supported the boys in the lead-up to the event.
Firstly, what is ROCA? The Rostrevor Old Collegians’ Association is an exclusive community which keeps old scholars connected for life. It provides connection and networking opportunities starting from old scholars straight out of school through to later years. ROCA does this via events, reunions, associated old scholar sporting clubs and regular publications. ROCA also funds College scholarships to sons and grandsons of old collegians.
Rostrevor’s old collegians are unique in the way we remain connected to each other and to the College. Our old scholar network is one of the larger, more active networks in Adelaide, but in this Rostrevor’s Centenary year, we aim to grow to even greater heights. ROCA is offering free Life Membership for a limited time to anyone from the Classes of 1923-2020. More details can be found in the latest ROCA News.
I strongly encourage you to ensure your son benefits from the ROCA community and network by becoming a ROCA member during Year 12, so that he can remain “Connected for Life!”.
