As we head into the weekend to conclude the week of Intercol, I share with you words shared by students leaders from both Rostrevor and Sacred Heart earlier this week at our Intercol Assembly.
"As we all know, this week is the Intercol week - the highlight of the winter season of sport for both our Colleges. We look forward to hosting and welcoming Sacred Heart College to Rostrevor in our centenary year.
There have been many tight contests between our two great schools and the atmosphere is always tense before every Intercol fixture. This great rivalry is in its 100th year and is a huge part of our sporting calendar. This year we would like to look beyond the rivalry between our schools and show that whilst we have been fierce competitors with them for many, many years, Sacred Heart is a hugely respected opponent.
We wish those competing all the very best. It is without a doubt a privilege to partake in such a well-respected rivalry, which is something envied by many other schools. We shall continue to honour and respect Rostrevor both on and off the field for many years to come. As I stand here with the captains of our First teams it is important that we acknowledge our Intercol motto which we have had in place since 2019; Respect Outweighs Rivalry."
I thank all those, from both Colleges, who have done so much behind the scenes to ensure this week and tomorrow is a successful celebration of the collegial rivalry between our Colleges. We look forward to supporting the red and black tomorrow and welcoming students, families, supporters and old collegians from both schools.
This week, our Junior Years students celebrated Children’s Book Week. The Ideas Centre was transformed into a colourful space, equipped with a new reading nook and Book Fair. They were treated to visits from two authors; Katrina Germein who read her picture book One Little Duck to our younger students, and Indigenous author Dr Jared Thomas who spoke to students about Aboriginal culture as it relates to his new book, Uncle XBox.
The highlight of the week, as always, was the Book Week parade where we saw students, teachers and Prefects dressed as their favourite storybook characters!
Last week, 25 Year 10 and 11 students participated in the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y) Program. The P.A.R.T.Y Program is a full-day interactive trauma prevention program for young Australians aged 15 and over.
Specialised Nurses and Allied Health Professionals from the RAH provided interactive experiences and a Trauma survivor/ambassador shared his brave story of injury and his long road to recovery. It is hoped that our students received a better understanding of the outcomes of risky decisions - decisions that can affect their lives and those of others forever.
Students in Years 3 - 6 enjoyed Nitro Nat’s scientific displays yesterday, demonstrating how different chemical combinations produce exciting reactions. Nitro Nat visited the students as an extension of last week’s National Science Week.
A tradition started by teacher Paul Deegan years ago, the Rally in the Valley is an exciting moment during Intercol each year for the Senior and Middle Years boys to gather and celebrate their pride for the Red & Black. The tradition was reignited with passion yesterday after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.
Yesterday, a group of Middle and Senior Years students travelled to Golden Grove to assist in a casketball Carnival for students with disabilities. Delivered in partnership with Special Olympics Australia and Golden Grove High School, our students provided hands-on support for the event, including playing on a team, refereeing, timekeeping, marshalling, and most importantly: building friendships with the external students engaged in the event. The carnival was a wonderful opportunity for our boys to live out the values of our Justice Solidarity Touchstone while they developed confidence and leadership skills.
Held at Rostrevor College during the Term 3 Holidays, the clinics are designed to develop players’ skills in a fun, safe and exciting environment inclusive of all abilities. The clinics are open to boys and girls from the wider Rostrevor community in Years 1 - 10.
