On Monday, the College Prefects held a fundraising BBQ for our Year 7-12 students to accompany their House Colours Day. In addition, wristbands were sold with a commemorative ‘Century of Unity’ design – a project undertaken by Head Prefect, Lachlan Tripodi. All funds raised will go to Edmund Rice Camps Australia – a peer mentoring and positive role model program for children who have experienced adversity. All students are permitted to wear the wristbands to school this year.
Students from R-12 gathered in the Valley for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy and the launch of Project Compassions Lenten campaign.
Students led the liturgy with symbols, prayers and reverent participation. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and our journey towards Easter. Lent is a season of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Our students were challenged to come closer to God today, by fasting from technology, taking time to pray regularly and to share what they have with those less fortunate than themselves through Project Compassion.
The Year 9 Agriculture classes welcomed some new additions to the farm last week, with the hatching of 10 baby chicks. Students are learning about the incubation process, the various requirements of rearing chicks from birth, as well as tracking their weight gain over time. Handling of the chicks is always a highlight!
The Ideas Centre has been a hive of activity this week, as we rearranged our shelves and books to make space for new picture book furniture which enables easy access for younger readers and encourages letter recognition. We are seeing positive results already in the boys’ renewed excitement as they explore the improved layout and discover new books to love!
Elena Lanzilli has been running reading workshops for the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 families, sharing her knowledge of the ‘Science of Reading’, and how we teach reading at Rostrevor College. Thank you to our families for embracing these workshops - when families and educators work together, we provide the best opportunities for our boys to thrive!
On Tuesday 21st February, our Indigenous boarding students Laquell Banderson, Michael Bin-Hitam Morgan, Jasch Davis, Shannon Devery, William Farmer, Seth Colling and Zaivier Page were invited to participate in the Loreto College Social Night. Students from a range of schools were Welcomed to Country by Uncle John Lochowiak in Loreto's Indigenous Garden with a smoking ceremony to bless the new year.
Following this, students were joined by guest speaker, Sam Powell-Pepper from the Port Adelaide Football Club, who spoke about his journey into the AFL, schooling and the importance of staying resilient and finishing school. Students gathered for a shared dinner, followed by games and activities in Loreto’s school gym. Our Aboriginal Program Prefect, Jasch Davis stated, “It was a great opportunity to gather as a community of Aboriginal students. I’m looking forward to having Rostrevor host an event like this in the future”.
Pre-ordered Centenary merchandise is now available to collect from Front Reception. Online orders will remain open until Tuesday 28 February. On Tuesday, Rostrevor was victorious over Pulteney Grammar and Henley High in Round 1 of the Year 9/10 Knockout Competition.
We were sent to bat against Pulteney Grammar in game 1 and after a slow start to the innings, we posted 86 off 15 overs. Chasing 87 for the win, Pulteney got out the blocks quick and looked to be cruising at 4/73 off 10 overs. With an early return to school on the line, the boys clicked in to gear and took 6/10 off the next three overs inciting pandemonium from the parents in attendance!
With a spot in Round 2 on the line in the next game against Henley, we were thrown the ball and managed to restrict Henley to 91 off 15 overs. Wickets fell throughout the chase, but the calmness shown by the boys in particular Captain Alecs Zorzi 48 not out, ensured we got the win with 4 balls remaining.
Good luck for next week’s game against Roma Mitchel!
After his participation in the Barcelona Training Camp over the summer holidays, Year 10 student, Joseph Chong has been selected amongst 15 other players from across Australia to fly to Spain to participate in a competition where he will compete against teams from all over the world. Congratulations on your selection, Joseph, and good luck!
On Sunday, I attended the South Australian Handball Association celebration of our Centenary year. Amongst balloons, bunting and a barbecue there was a competition between old scholars of Rostrevor and CBC. I had the honour of presenting the Rostrevor players with their commemorative shirts, and CBC Principal, Mr David Johnstone, presented the purple and white shirts to the CBC team. The old scholars then played a series of games, and on this occasion, CBC were victorious with 7 wins to 3.
The handballers were honouring this unique sport brought to Adelaide by the Irish Christian Brothers 100 years ago. Handball courts were among the first structures built at both schools and boys have been playing on them at recess and lunch ever since.
Term dates for 2023 are available by clicking HERE.
