Principal’s News - 23 June 2023

Last Friday I attended the Rostrevor Old Collegians’ Association (ROCA) Business Lunch, and it certainly demonstrated the strong connection that the Old Collegians have to the College! I would like to acknowledge and thank Angelo Piantadosi (‘82) and our College Development Team for their ongoing efforts this year and for the hours of work they have put into creating such a successful event. The College continues to enjoy working in close partnership with ROCA, ensuring that our old collegians are truly connected for life.

With only one week of formal lessons remaining for the Semester, I know our learners are looking forward to school holidays. Our Year 11 students head off on Service Learning next week after their exams this week, and our Year 10s have exams still to take place before we head into a well-deserved break.

Stage 2 Outdoor Education Camp

The Stage 2 Outdoor Education students were treated to three days of beautiful sunshine on the pristine back waters around the Renmark region last week. The group adopted a fantastic attitude, functioned cohesively as a team and enjoyed each other's company whilst navigating a 30 kilometer kayaking loop and relaxing around the campsites. The Year 12s are working towards their final self-directed expedition next term where they are responsible for all aspects of planning and execution.

Collage of Migration 2023

On Friday last week, a group of Rostrevor students attended the annual display of the Collage of Migration at Mary MacKillop College. This celebration honours the stories and sacrifices of the family and friends of Year 10 students from Rostrevor College and Mary MacKillop College who immigrated to Australia. The event welcomed more than 100 guests who were treated to a display of stories and photographs, as well as musical interludes by the Rostrevor Small Jazz band and Mary MacKillop College Choir.

Pink Day

Our Prefects joined Loreto College students for their annual ‘Pink Day’ on Friday last week. The day is a fundraiser for breast cancer research, with Loreto students donning pink clothes for a day of activities. Our Prefects participated in the fashion parade and took on the Loreto Prefects in a friendly game of netball, with our opponents claiming the win this time!

Children’s Book Council of Australia Judge Visit

Sarah Forrest, a Judge for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) visited Rostrevor on Wednesday to discuss the criteria of judging a book. Our Year 5 students are once again participating in the CBCA Shadow Judging project and will judge the Picture Book category in 2023. Sarah spoke of the importance of analysing a book by looking at components such as plot, characters, setting and themes.

Edmund Rice Foundation Year 8 Visit

Jason Bongers from the Edmund Rice Foundation visited our Year 8 students with special guest Tommy Nawir this week. Tommy was born in the informal settlement of Kibera – a vast urban slum in Nairobi Kenya – and had a childhood defined by extreme poverty. His story of receiving an education thanks to the kindness of a stranger and making it his life mission to help others in the same way was inspiring and is at the heart and soul of our Edmund Rice Charism.

Junior Years Open Morning

On Tuesday morning the Junior Years welcomed prospective families to learn more about our evidence-based teaching and learning approaches, meet with teachers and leaders and visit classrooms to see learning in action.

We extend a warm invitation to all prospective parents, students and families to join us for the next Junior Years Open Morning on Tuesday, 19 September at 9:00am. If you know of a family considering enrolling in the Rostrevor Junior Years, please encourage them to contact Annemarie Mein, the College Registrar on 8364 8244 or email enrolments@rostrevor.sa.edu.au

ROSTREVOR OLD COLLEGIANS’ ASSOCIATION NEWS

2023 ROCA Business Lunch

On Friday last week, almost 500 Old Collegians and extended community members gathered at the Adelaide Oval for the 2023 ROCA Business Lunch. The day was a resounding success, with networking and catching up with old friends being the focus.

A highlight of the day was when one of our oldest known Old Scholars, Fr David Wilkie (‘43), led the room in grace.

Thank you to our guest speakers – Old Scholars John Aloisi and Luke Darcy, both from the Class of ‘92. You may recognise them from their successful sporting careers in soccer and the AFL respectively, or simply as members of the Rostrevor College community.

A huge thanks also goes to the sponsors, most of whom are Old Scholars. Without these people, the event couldn’t have happened: 2023 ROCA Business Lunch Sponsors. I encourage all Rostrevor families and Old Scholars to support these sponsors.

Finally, I would like to thank the hundreds of Rostrevor Community members who attended the lunch in support of ROCA in the College’s Centenary year. The overwhelming support of the event is testament to how our Old Scholars really do remain ‘Connected for Life’. I invite you to ensure your son becomes a ROCA Life Member upon graduation so that he can remain part of our thriving Old Scholar community!

Angelo Piantadosi (‘82)
ROCA President

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

School Sport Associations Pink Round

In support of Australians affected by breast cancer, School Sport Associations have scheduled Pink Round into our sports fixture calendars for all matches this week. We encourage players, officials, supervisors, and spectators to wear pink during this round, as an act of solidarity to raise breast cancer awareness, generate discussion encouraging breast screening, and show support for the 20,000+ women and men diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year. See the letter sent to families for more information.

Year 7 Basketball

The Year 7 Black and Year 7 Red Basketball teams played each other in an official match on Wednesday afternoon. It was the Red team who held an early lead, but the Black team proved too strong with their aerial dominance and court speed in the second half. Congratulations to Year 7 Black for their 60-34-point win. Thank you to Senior basketballers Michael Banelis and Hayden Le for refereeing the game.

Best Players:
Year 7 Black – Chris Vari, Jordan Becker and Zac Seret.
Year 7 Red – Tasman Rains, Joshua Murray and Alex Babic.

Pedal Prix

Rostrevor participated in the Australian Human Powered Vehicle Super Series race (Pedal Prix) last weekend. The six hours race took place at the Victoria Park Racecourse in Adelaide. A total of 22 students were divided between the two teams. Each student took turns riding for 25 to 45 minutes throughout the day. Team Rossi claimed the 36th position, while Team Eddy finished 56th out of the 143 competing teams. Our fast Middle Years students led the way, keeping Team Eddy ahead of Rossi during the opening hours of the race. Their focus now shifts to preparations for the upcoming 24-hour race in Murray Bridge this September.

U17 Joeys Update

Fabian Talladira (Year 12), currently in Thailand at the Asia Cup, has played two of the three Joeys games so far. The team has made it through to the quarter finals and are one win away from qualifying for the World Cup! Fabian didn’t play in the first game against Saudi Arabia where they lost 0-2, but then played half a game against China to win 5-3, and played the full game against Tajikistan to win 2-0. His family, including Adriano Talladira (Year 7) has flown to Thailand to support him. Good luck for the rest of the Cup, Fabian!
