Principal’s News - 23 February 2024

Rostrevor's Year 5 students return home today from their three-day camp at Finniss. They took advantage of the warm weather as they tried their hands at new activities like boogie boarding, paddle boarding and competitive puzzles. They also learnt about water safety and scientific water testing. The trip highlight was the annual high-stakes cricket match which saw Ben Coscia take the catch of the year, much to teacher Bram Schiller's dismay, claiming it hit the ground!

Camps play such an important part in the development of young learners; building their resilience, independence and social skills as they make memories with friends they will cherish for the rest of their lives. Thank you to the many wonderful staff who go above and beyond to ensure the College’s camps run to such a high standard.

Receptions’ Blessing

Our Reception students were welcomed into our community during a liturgy in the Chapel last week, attended by their families and Years 1-3 peers. Lead by Junior Years Captains Sebastien and Harry, we gathered to pray and sing together in this special moment at the beginning of their Rostrevor journey.

Aboriginal Studies Excursion

On Tuesday, Year 11 and 12 Aboriginal Studies students travelled to the South Australian Museum for a guided tour with curator and Indigenous man, Dr. Jared Thomas. They were engaged in rich cultural stories from mob and in-depth learning about innovations such as the boomerang and how it influenced modern understanding of physics and flying today.

Engaging our students in dialogue that promotes the sharing of stories, culture, history and language ensures a deeper understanding of their own culture which enables them to share this with other students and the wider Rostrevor Community.

Road Safety Reminder

I would like to gently remind families that the safety of Rostrevor students as they enter and exit the College around drop-off and pick-up times is the responsibility of everyone in the community. There are staff members stationed in high-risk areas around the College during these times, but parents and caregivers are urged to please take care when driving in and around the College, remaining vigilant and adhering to speed limits and pedestrian crossings to best ensure the safety of Rostrevor students.

Out of School Hours Care (OSHC)

Designed to support families with before and after school care needs, the YMCA Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program at Rostrevor offers a safe, engaging and nurturing environment for primary students outside of regular school hours.

With a focus on fun and educational activities, the OSHC program offers a well-rounded experience tailored to meet the diverse needs of our school community. This year, the OSHC program is available from 2:20pm on Mondays to cater for the weekly early finish.

To enrol or ask questions, please contact the OSHC support team on 8200 3516 or visit the YMCA website HERE.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

New First XI Record

Congratulations to Dom Zappia and Jake Polkinghorne who on Saturday stunned spectators with a 220-run partnership during Rostrevor’s First XI away match against St Ignatius. Jake’s 114 runs and Dom’s 106 runs combined to break the College record for most runs in a single partnership in a First XI game. The pair set an un-chaseable run count, winning Rostrevor the match with 7/321 to St Ignatius’s 10/121.

This was Jake’s first time making a century in a cricket match, and Dom’s first time scoring 100 for Rostrevor.

2024 Schools SA Cycling Championships

Seven Rostrevor students participated in the Schools SA Cycling Championship on Tuesday, competing in a field of 70 riders. The first race of the day saw riders sprint every second lap to earn points. Ryan Underwood excelled, earning close to maximum points. Aiden Launer secured points in three out of five sprints in B grade, while Jacob Stephenson and Zane Kidd stayed with the main pack, narrowly missing points in several sprints. William Ruotolo and Zac Seret also performed well to finish their events in the hot conditions.

The final race for the day was a criterium race. Ryan claimed first place in C grade, placing him in first overall for the day in his category. Liam worked hard to secure fourth place overall for the championship in A grade. Aiden led the pack for several laps but finished mid-pack in the B grade event. Congratulations to all involved for their excellent teamwork and participation.
