Music has been a key aspect of Rostrevor’s culture and curriculum for its entire 100-year history. The Centenary episode below - The Song of Rostrevor - is a wonderful explanation of what music means to the College community.
Congratulations to all students who were recognised in today’s Winter Co-Curricular Assembly. Every student who participated in a Co-Curricular activity over Terms 2 and 3 did a fantastic job representing the College, and should be proud of both their personal and their teams’ achievements. I would also like to thank the many coaches, team managers, volunteers, staff and supporters of the Co-Curricular program who helped to make the season a success - our students wouldn’t have these opportunities without your support! For a full list of award recipients, download the Winter Co-Curricular Assembly booklet HERE.
The newly elected 2024 Prefect Elect embarked on a 3-day camp with senior members of the Leadership Team. The camp acted as an orientation program in addition to further strengthening the bonds between the students as well as with staff. The camp focused on leadership training, team building, understanding roles and responsibilities, problem-solving and scenario training as well as planning and preparing for 2024 events.
The Prefect Camp was a foundational step in ensuring that next year's leaders are equipped, motivated, and united in serving our College community. We wish our Prefects all the best as they take on the reins unofficially in Term 4.
The year 10 Outdoor Education class enjoyed three days canoeing along the waterways at Renmark this week. Some keen fishers took every opportunity they could to rid the river of carp including a 75cm catch from Ash Wakelin.
A boarders vs day students cricket match on a wicket used through the Second World War proved competitive with the day students reigning victorious by a single run. The boys learned some history about the Internment Camp and advanced their knowledge on local ecology and sustainable camping. The year 10s' natural competence shone through with many suggesting an extra day was needed.
Kristina Clonan, a 2024 Paris Olympics hopeful in Track Cycling came to share her story to our Year 8 students on Wednesday. The Olympics Unleashed program connects students across the country with Olympians and aspiring Olympians. Kristina delivered a presentation on the themes of unleashing your passion, building resilience, facing and overcoming challenges, determination and setting goals.
On Wednesday, representatives from the four Rostrevor Old Collegians sports clubs visited the College to speak with Year 12s about signing up after graduation. The sports teams are an excellent way for Old Collegians to remain connected and active after graduation, and numbers across all sports are currently flourishing. The clubs held a BBQ for the Year 12s after the presentation which provided an opportunity for the boys to get to know their future club presidents, coaches and teammates.
I would like to thank the following Old Collegians who took the time to speak to our Year 12s on Wednesday:
On Wednesday the Year 5 cohort completed their official SAPOL Crossing Guard training in preparation for next year. Thank you to the two Police Officers from SAPOL who came out to provide our boys with this important training.
On Monday, a group of Year 7 and 8 students travelled to AFL Max to be part of the ‘Embrace Kids’ program. The boys were lucky to hear from current Australian of the Year, Taryn Brumfitt about her mission for young people to embrace their body types and recognise that many images posted on social media are not real. Students also viewed the ‘Embrace Kids’ film before participating in a physical activity session to promote good health for the remainder of the experience.
The Year 11 Legal Studies students visited Parliament House on Tuesday where they were hosted by the Hon. John Gardner MP. After an interesting tour and lively discussion, they headed down to the Courts where they sat in on the cross examination in an arson case.
The Duggan House Term 3 High Tea was a celebration of footy with the boarders wearing their team guernseys, ranging from their home team to their favourite AFL club.
Our guest speaker was past boarder and Gurr House Captain, Jacob Kennerly from Norwood Football Club. Jacob spoke about his journey from Cummins on the Eyre peninsula to Rostrevor before being selected at draft pick 50 to the Geelong Cats in 2018. Boarding had prepared him well for the move interstate and the challenges it presented. Jacob has since returned to Norwood FC, winning the 2022 premiership and being appointed co-captain this year. Jacob’s message that hard work is more important than talent was well received.
Boarder of the Term awards were presented to Curtis Page (Year 10), Noah Matthews (Year 11) and Jay Johns (12) in recognition of their positive contribution to the Duggan House community.
Last weekend saw the final event of the Pedal Prix season, where 153 teams competed at the 24-hour race at Murray Bridge. Scrutineering, setup and practice was held on Friday, before the race start midday on Saturday. This year Rostrevor College entered one team, condensed from our usual two teams due to the demands of the endurance event. Our team of 12 managed their time well to find a balance between performance and rest. The riders looked after the vehicle well, only encountering minor mechanical issues throughout the event. Rostrevor placed 28th of 46 within the Senior School category, completing 430 laps of the course, equal to 740kms. Thank you to all the parents that joined the team for the event and helped with the catering and track marshalling duties.
Good luck to Dylan Lomman, Tom Laube, Kai Fendt, Dylan Rehn and Brock Langeluddecke as they venture to Melbourne for the U14 National Basketball Championships today. Their Norwood Flames team joins two other South Australian teams in the tournament after qualifying as the top three teams in the state. They will play 24 of the best teams in Australia over the course of the competition.
Congratulations to Cooper Shaw (Year 5) who was part of the winning 4 x 100m relay team at the recent School Sports SA Athletics Competition! Cooper and his team have now qualified to represent South Australia at the National School Sports competition.
Congratulations to Adriano Talladira (Year 7) on his selection for the School Sports SA 12 Years and Under Soccer team! Adriano will travel to Victoria in October to represent SA at the School Sport Australia Soccer Championships. Good luck, Adriano!
