National Boarding Week is a time for our community to celebrate the wonderful contributions our boarding students make to the life of the College and community. Rostrevor College was founded in 1923 to cater for the growing number of boarding students at Christian Brothers College. 101 years later, the College continues to provide a home away from home for boys from across Australia.
The residents of Duggan House have been busy this week, facilitating tailored tours for all staff and the Year 6 cohort, running a BBQ (with a touch of country) for charity, and planning and attending a Duggan House High Tea. Guest Speaker James Wittwer (Head Boarder 2004) spoke about his experience as a boarding student at the High Tea and offered valuable advice about making the most of the opportunities boarding offers.
This week Rostrevor also celebrated Catholic Education Week alongside our fellow Catholic schools across South Australia. With a focus on this year’s theme 'The wonder and awe of God’s Creation', students and staff were encouraged to reflect on and give thanks for what they love about belonging to a Catholic school community.
This year Rostrevor College placed third out of 43 schools from across South Australia in the Times Tables Rockstars competition. Along with this, Rostrevor’s Year 5 students placed fourth out of 193 classes from across the state. What an achievement! A total of 2957 students participated in the competition, and the following Year 5 students were in the top 20: Guru Karnati (7th), Lachlan Rodgers (8th), Luke Harris (14th) and Hennessy Roper (15th). Congratulations to all students who participated!
Today we welcomed Rostrevor’s newest students to our community - the Little Rossi Learners! Seven boys came to the College this morning to participate in their first taste of being a student, spending time with future teacher A’ishah Adamo and getting to know their new learning environment before they join the 2024 Reception class in Term 3.
Britta Corones’s Year 9 English Class produced a unit of work that connected English skills with their love of soccer last week. After rehearsing and refining well-designed lesson plans, they were able to facilitate multiple lessons with our Junior Years classes who responded with a high level of energy and excitement. The Year 9s had the opportunity to understand and practice in the roles of players, coaches, managers, complaint handlers, trainers and assessors.
“During this learning opportunity we learned a lot of persistence and respect, we learned how to teach kids and how to appreciate their understanding of learning. This was a very important learning opportunity for us. What we enjoyed from this was setting out the drills and helping the kids with their soccer,” - Alex Ciaramellano, Levi Cavaiuolo and Luca Condina.
On Friday last week the Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students accompanied by teachers Carelyn Robinson and Evan Pezos toured Parliament House where they were hosted by the Hon. John Gardner MP and Laura Henderson MLC. This followed an interesting morning visiting the Supreme, District and Magistrates Courts where they were given the opportunity to sit in on various trials and sentencing matters.
Last week students in the Junior Years spent time participating in a Little Picassos art class where they listened carefully and followed instructions to create their mums and special friends beautiful Mother’s Day gifts. The boys honed their creative flair to produce beautiful flower-filled canvases that were given as gifts on Sunday. Thank you to Elena Lanzilli for organising this wonderful initiative.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a literacy engagement program that encourages Junior Years students across the country to read more books, ultimately helping to improve their literacy. This year, Rostrevor students who elect to participate in the challenge are invited by Ideas Centre Coordinator Jess Hogan to add one leaf to the Premier’s Reading Challenge tree for every book that they finish. The tree is looking fuller and healthier every day! We are hoping that the tree will be overflowing with luscious foliage by the time the challenge ends on 6 September 2024.
The Olympics Unleashed program first came to Rostrevor in 2023 and we were fortunate enough to have Lachie Davis, an aspiring Olympian gymnast come to deliver the program to the Year 8 cohort yesterday. Lachie spoke passionately about his career as a professional gymnast, including the sacrifices, setbacks and rewards he has experienced in his field. He spoke about following his dream and the necessity to follow his passion to succeed in his ultimate goal of representing Australia at the Olympics. Thank you to Belinda DeConno Coward for organising such a wonderful event.
Edmund Rice Education Australia is reimagining how they work as an authentic overarching organisation governing EREA schools including Rostrevor, CBC and St Paul’s College. Week 2 of the 2024 Winter Co-Curricular season saw Rostrevor’s First XVIII and Second XVIII play opponents from Westminster School in two home games on Saturday. Despite leading for most of the game, Westminster proved too strong for the First XVIII, winning 10.12.72 to 10.9.69. The Second XVIII played a strong game, finishing with a convincing win against Westminster’s seconds 13.16.94 to 2.4.16.

The Year 2/3 Basketball teams had fun at the ARC Campbelltown this week, with three teams playing against St David’s, St Pius X and Thorndon Park. With two of the three teams guided by the expert coaching of Year 11 student Frazer Lawrie, all teams put up a fight against their opponents and displayed fantastic camaraderie and sportsmanship.
In a thrilling display of skill and sportsmanship, the Rostrevor Development XI clinched a narrow 2-1 victory over the Rostrevor Select XI in the Division 2 Wednesday Night Twilight competition. The match, held on our school grounds, was a showcase of fierce competitiveness and passion, embodying the true spirit of the game. Both teams demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship, upholding the values of our school. This game not only highlighted the talents of our soccer players but also their commitment to integrity and respect on the field. Congratulations to all players for a match well played!
On Friday last week, seven Junior Years boys made the trip over to Sturt Gorge for the annual SAPSASA Mountain Biking competition. Rostrevor had three teams compete in the event with all boys showing outstanding perseverance along with an abundance of red and black spirit.
