Our Year 12s are looking forward to one of the biggest nights in their school year as they head to the Principal’s Ball at the Hilton this Saturday night. The prefects, along with College staff, have prepared a night that we hope will be enjoyed and remembered by the Class of 2023 and their guests. We look forward to sharing the many, many photos that will be taken on the night with you all next week!
This week we had a visit from our friends from Manchester City as they came to meet with coaches, staff and students to check in and see how the Manchester City Football School has developed and progressed since the start of the year. It has been great to see the boys so engaged in their learning in the Football School and the level of genuine respect for their coaches, the game, one another and the manner in which they conduct themselves on and off this pitch is to be commended!
We were also very excited to launch the first of our Manchester City Football School Holiday Clinics for this coming April holidays. There are limited places left for the Week 1 clinics with the Week 2 clinics already booked to capacity! Further clinics will be held in July and October and will be advertised in the coming months.
Held on the Rostrevor House Front Lawns, this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich talent within the Arts at Rostrevor College. Bring your own picnic rug and refreshments whilst enjoying the many wonderful sounds of the last 100 years from our student and old scholar bands.
A variety of grazing boxes are available to pre-order for collection on the evening. Limited tickets are available for this event due to capacity restrictions so book your tickets today to ensure you don't miss out!
At our Principal’s Assembly this morning we acknowledged leadership in a range of settings, from students who have been given a role to represent their peers as Captains or House Vice Captains, to those acknowledged for their efforts at our Swimming Carnival and at our Middle Years Camps.
Pope Francis has said about the importance of education, to learn to be generous and to do well the simple things, and I quote “It is doing small things every day with a big heart open to God and to others. So, we tend to a human formation aimed at generosity. School not only expands your intellectual dimension, but also the human heart.” The opportunities awarded to our boys in areas of leadership, camps, co-curricular and advocacy are for the purpose of extending and complementing the learning which occurs in the classroom.
After the boys were presented with their badges and awards, the Prefects took to the stage to talk to their peers about Ride for Cancer – a fundraising initiative being undertaken by Rostrevor’s Director of Co-Curricular Programs, Luke Manuel, and four of his old scholar friends. Our Middle and Senior Years students then took time to reflect on those in their own lives who have been affected by cancer, before writing those names on paper signs that they have displayed in the Valley.
On Tuesday we held a special blessing liturgy for our new Reception students. Reception students and their families were welcomed into our faith community and presented with a gift of sunflower seeds. These seeds represent the potential for new beginnings and their ability to grow tall and strong – just like our students!
At the end of the liturgy, we formally presented our Year 6 leaders for 2023. These students have been selected for their outstanding leadership qualities and commitment to the Rostrevor College community.
On Thursday, Che Murray took Rostrevor’s Indigenous students to the Sonder and Nunkuwarrin Yunti Closing the Gap Day 2023, the biggest event in the state dedicated to improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In celebration of the world’s oldest living cultures, our students engaged in First Nations’ music, dance and art while exploring the breadth of support that is available to them in South Australia.
Will Farmer (Year 10) stated, “It was great to see all the help and support that’s out there for us fellas. There’s lots of businesses and in particular, heath care, that can support Indigenous people”. A sentiment echoed by Lachlan Nation (Year 10), “I was lucky enough to go to the day and found some great information about Indigenous health and the support available and also careers. The people were great to talk to”.
On Tuesday last week, Mr Malkin’s Year 11 Business Innovation class, along with Mr Vorrasi, attended a StartUp Academy Workshop at the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Our students listened to a range of guest speakers with a focus on entrepreneurial thought and mindset growth. Students were prompted to think, design, and pitch a solution to a problem to a panel of guest speakers. These sessions challenged the students to determine ways to live more sustainably, and to develop their potential as future problem solvers who can make a positive impact in the world.
The weather was perfect yesterday for our Years 3-6 students to participate in their annual swimming carnival. There were some impressive House chants happening in support of each boy who gave it his all in the pool, showing off skills learned during the Junior Years swimming program earlier this term. Congratulations to Barron who finished as House champions, Sebastien Conhye for winning the Brian James Meaney Memorial Cup for Most Outstanding Junior Years Swimmer, as well as our Years 3-6 age champions:
