Principal’s News - 16 August 2024

The Feast of the Assumption is a beautiful solemnity in the Catholic Church and a reminder of the special place Mary has in God's plan of salvation. Our community commemorated the Feast of the Assumption yesterday with a Mass lead by Old Collegian Fr Anthony Beltrame (’09) and a Liturgy of the Word in the Chapel for Junior students. We take this time to pray for every Christian that Mary’s Assumption will be a sign of hope as they make their pilgrim journey through life with faith.

EREA Primary Leaders Day

The Year 6 Leadership team were hosted by St Paul’s College for their EREA Primary Leaders Day last week, where they were given the chance to brainstorm and collaborate with each other. They discussed different charities and organisations that they could fundraise money for, focusing on the questions; 'why do we choose this charity/organisation?' and 'what would the money go towards?'.

Infinite Aged Care Visit

On Wednesday this week, a group of students chose to participate in a meaningful visit to Infinite Aged Care in Klemzig, celebrating the Olympics by engaging in activities like archery and bowling alongside residents. This also provided an opportunity for students to accrue service hours for the Service Learning aspect of their Rostrevor education.

Eyre Peninsula Field Days

Rostrevor College was represented at this week’s Eyre Peninsula Field Days at Cleve, with College Registrar Annemarie Mein and Director of Boarding Michael Vickery in attendance. They spent three days catching up with many members of the College community and getting to know families interested in sending their sons to board at Rostrevor in years to come.

Government House Visit

On Friday of Week 3, Ignatius Crafter (Year 12) and Will Marshall (Year 11) attended the Governor’s Winter Talks at Government House to hear guest speaker Tim Jarvis discuss environmental advocacy and South Australia's efforts to address climate change. They were also privileged to hear a presentation from the 2024 Young Australian of the Year for South Australia, Tiahni Adamson, who is a wildlife conservation biologist. The boys were highly motivated with ideas of how we can implement an environmental focus at Rostrevor in 2025.

The Silly Scientist

To celebrate Science Week 2024, students in the Junior Years participated in ‘The Silly Scientist Show’ - an interactive performance promoting positive attitudes toward science amongst our youngest learners. Students learned that science is all around us and that science is fun! They enjoyed learning about air pressure, optical illusions, sound and much more through singing and science experiments.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

First XI Grand Final

Congratulations to the First XI Soccer team who on Wednesday finished an incredible undefeated 2024 SAAS Division 1 season with a thrilling Grand Final win against CBC. Hear from Coach Jamie Lee about Wednesday’s game:

Rostrevor College made it a perfect season by crowning themselves Grand Final 2024 champions in what proved to be an epic finale to the SAAS season. CBC opened the scoring after a good save from Noah Mathews could only be parried into the path of the CBC striker who tapped into an empty net. This setback seemed to wake the Red and Black up and they started to put together some neat combinations. A ball from Thomas Mastrantuone allowed Christian Tassotti to dribble past a defender and cut the ball back for Barnaby Wood to equalise. Moments later a lightning quick counter-attack saw Vincenzo Scalzi impressively set up Antonio Siciliano who netted for the 4th game in a row to give Rossi a 2-1 lead at half time.

The second half didn’t take long to kick into action as CBC was awarded a penalty and made no mistake from the spot to draw the game level. With the game finishing 2-2 AET, it went into a tense penalty shootout. Noah Mathews became the hero of Rostrevor as he saved three penalties in a row allowing birthday boy Christian Tassotti the chance to bring the trophy back to Rostrevor.

SAAS Basketball Grand Finals

Congratulations to Rostrevor’s Open A2 (First V) and Middle A2 Basketball teams who have both made it into their respective SAAS Grand Finals this season! Best of luck to both teams!
