It was great to see the boys return to school this week, bringing an empty school back to life again after the two-week break.
Year 7-12 Pastoral Care teachers will conduct an "Academic Reflection" with their students. This reflection allows your son to consider his strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats which can influence his academic performance. As part of this process, he will be required to set some goals and to develop an action plan for the term ahead. You are most welcome to contact your son's Pastoral Care teacher should you have any questions.
One of our main College traditions is to celebrate the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice. This is a celebration of the life of the founder of our schools – Irishman, Edmund Rice, who became a holy man through his great work in providing schooling to uneducated boys and young men, particularly the poor and disadvantaged. Through the order he founded, the Christian Brother schools were started all over the world, including many in Australia. A total of 55 schools with over 40,000 students and 4,500 staff now continue under the banner of Edmund Rice Education Australia, the body that now carries on the founder's work, and of which we are all a part.
The depths of poverty in our world remind us, as we live comfortable lives, that we must take action to help others. Edmund Rice Day is a time when we come together to celebrate, and central to our celebration is our fundraising. Today, the College community acknowledged Edmund Rice Day with Mass, celebrated by recently-ordained Old Scholar, Fr Anthony Beltrame, followed by what we refer to as Unfair Day activities, organised by our House groups. View the Mass program here.

Over the next two weeks, our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will participate in NAPLAN testing. While it is important that students try their best, we certainly do not want students to feel stressed about undertaking these assessments.
At Rostrevor, we don't believe that one form of testing can truly measure the achievement and efforts of our students and effectively reveal the rich learning experiences that the College provides. We use a variety of data sources to evaluate student learning and teaching practice and then focus on areas where deficits may exist. More importantly, this allows us to identify students who require support, whether that is offered by the subject teacher, the use of literacy or numeracy programs or by support staff.
May is a month traditionally dedicated to honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary and it is very fitting that we celebrate Mother's Day during this time. As we honour the Mother of God, our spiritual mother, we also honour our earthly mothers. On Mother's Day, we remember our mothers with gratitude and affection, not only through material gifts, flowers, or cards but also, and more importantly, by our prayers for them. We thank God for the gift of our mothers who conceived and gave birth to us, who care for us, protect us, teach us and love us. We remember all our mothers, living and deceased. We thank them for their generosity and self-giving love.
"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity. It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path." - Agatha Christie
Happy Mother's Day to all Mums!
Rostrevor's youngest students had the opportunity to wear their blazers and ties this week and looked very smart.
It was also great to see our Year 7s in their formal winter uniform for the first time. To view the entire uniform range, families can login to, or create an account for, Rostrevor's Online Uniform Shop
Following a two-year phase-in timeframe, the College looks forward to a consistent uniform for all Co-Curricular teams, particularly at matches. Please read a letter from Frank Ranaldo - Dean of Students (R-12) regarding the new requirements here. To view the correct uniforms, see Winter Co-Curricular Uniform images

Rostrevor's soccer players added their voices to the campaign against violence towards women as part of the White Ribbon round of sporting events this week. At its trial match on Wednesday, Rostrevor joined CBC in solidarity with the White Ribbon movement, which is part of a global movement to eliminate gendered violence. It follows excellent work by our students in recent years around Respectful Relationships.
More than 70 players from Rostrevor's First XI, Second XI and Year 10 squads participated in the White Ribbon Carnival and leant their support to the following pledge:
"I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This is my oath"
It was an exciting return to school for Rostrevor's Year 8s as they embarked on a range of Outdoor Activity Days. From Tuesday to Thursday, the boys hiked, climb, ziplined and cycled in some of Adelaide's most scenic locations - bolstering skills and camaraderie.
Well done to Damon Stepic, Harrison Lynch, Charlie Crafter and Lachlan Tripodi who will continue the excellent contribution made by previous Rostrevor students to the Charter for Children and Young people. The four representatives will attend Government House on Tuesday to help shape the next stage of the Charter - which encapsulates the social, educational and safety priorities for young South Australians which will, in turn, be presented to the State Government and help influence future policies.
The students will meet State Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, at the official launch of the Charter Ambassador Program before attending a workshop.
Congratulations to trap shooter Stefen Parletta (Yr 8), who won Silver and Bronze in the National DTL Championships in NSW in April. Stefen was also named "best shooter" at the Mildura Easter Carnival having taken out back-to-back trophies at just 13 years of age.
More recently, Stefen and his equally-talented brother Lucas (Yr 10) competed at the Victoria State Titles and will head to Broken Hill next week to take part in the Junior Masters Competition. The boys are being closely watched by national coaches as they continue to record high competition scores and strive for selection in the Shooting Australia pathways squad, which develops elite shooters for international competition.
