Acting Principal’s News - 6 September 2024

This week College Principal Mrs Shana Bennet commenced a period of well-earned renewal leave through to the end of Term 3. We wish her well for her break and look forward to her return at the commencement of Term 4.

On her behalf earlier this week, I was humbled to announce and welcome the 2025 College Prefect group. I congratulate these students on their appointments to lead Rostrevor through the 2025 school year. I have no doubt they will lead the College as diligently as the generations of students who have occupied the roles before them, and that they will leave their mark on the community, making a positive impact and leaving their legacy for those to come. Winter Co-Curricular Awards

Congratulations to all those students who were recognised at today’s Co-Curricular Assembly. Students who consistently displayed Rostrevor’s values and who were exceptional in their performance across the winter season were formally acknowledged and presented medals in front of the whole Middle and Senior Years cohort. I would also like to acknowledge all those students who didn’t get a medal this year but who always put in the effort, showing up for their team, hanging back to help pack up after training, stepping into roles that benefit their team or who are just good teammates. These students are the backbone of our co-curricular teams. I would also like to thank the outstanding work of the Co-Curricular team; Jordan Young, Sarah Catterwell and Joel Size for their invaluable work in this space, and the countless staff, coaches, team managers and supporters who ensure Rostrevor students can continue to enjoy a thriving Co-Curricular Program.

Royal Adelaide Show Livestock team

Rostrevor College took our six wether goats to the show to be part of the Led Wether Schools competition alongside around 270 other goats from 40 other schools yesterday. 13 Rostrevor students from Years 7-11 have spent multiple lunchtimes per week over the last two terms working with, handling and monitoring the health and nutrition of the goats in preparation for the show. The students’ first time showing livestock went better than we could have hoped, with three of the goats winning individual ribbons (2nd, 4th and 5th) in their respective weight class and the team winning fifth place for the ‘most professional team’. More importantly the students learned plenty about the goat industry and what makes a quality goat, made good connections, and practiced their teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Thank you to Agriculture Coordinator Sam Powell for organising this wonderful opportunity!

Olympian Visit

Thank you to two-time Olympic athlete Izzi Batt-Doyle who came to visit Rostrevor’s Junior Years students on Monday. A highly successful runner in the 5000m and marathon events, Izzi spoke to our youngest learners about her journey to the Olympics, starting at the age of eight, and fielded a barrage of questions from many enthusiastic aspiring athletes.

National Child Protection Week (1-7 September 2024)

In 2024, the National Child Protection Week message is ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’ and is complemented with the theme ‘Every conversation matters’. Conversations are powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. Conversations can help us understand issues, craft solutions, value community knowledge, and build the brains and social connections of children and young people.

Conversations between:
...children and their caregivers matter (from the very earliest days)
...children and their peers matter
...families with teachers, doctors, and other professionals matter
...friends or neighbours matter
...decision-makers and the communities they serve matter.

And, of course, conversations in the public realm and media matter.

Rostrevor College, as a school in the Edmund Rice tradition, is committed to the safety of all students entrusted to our care. All children and young people who come to the College have a right to feel and be safe. We are committed to providing a child-safe and child-friendly environment where children and young people are safe, feel safe and can actively participate in decisions that affect their lives.

The College regards its child-safeguarding responsibilities with the utmost importance and, as such, is committed to providing the necessary resources to ensure compliance with all relevant child protection laws and regulations and maintaining a child-safe culture. Each member of the College community has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role that they play individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all students are at the forefront of all that they do and every decision that they make.

Adelaide 36ers High Performance Tournament

On Wednesday, the Open A and Middle A Basketball teams participated in the Adelaide 36ers High Performance Schools Tournament as part of our partnership with the program. Competing against four other schools also involved in the program, the Middle A team performed well, securing two wins out of four games. Meanwhile, our Open A team had an outstanding day, going undefeated in all four of their matches and ultimately defeating Sacred Heart College in the Grand Final to become the inaugural champions of the tournament!

Soccer Presentation Night

On Wednesday evening, students involved in the First XI, Select XI and Development XI Soccer teams gathered at the Altavilla Irpina Sports and Social Club to celebrate their season and recognise the teams’ standout players. Thank you to the many people who worked behind the scenes to facilitate the event and who helped Rostrevor’s most senior soccer teams to achieve such fantastic results this year. The First XI’s season is not quite done, however. They will play one more game this year against the top team from the School Sport SA league, with the winner crowned the best school team in South Australia!

Year 9/10 Knockout Soccer

The Year 9/10 Rostrevor knockout soccer squad progressed to the semi-finals this week after they put on an impressive performance against Adelaide High on Tuesday. Rostrevor dominated the game with the ball and made sure they nullified any threat the opposition were able to produce. They ended with a convincing 7-0 win and will move on to the finals on Tuesday 24 September at the FSA Centre at Gepps Cross.
