Today, marks the start of National Reconciliation Week - a significant week for our country and for the Rostrevor community. Throughout next week, we will acknowledge our First Nations students past and present in a wide range of activities, and explore the 2022 theme "Be Brave. Make Change" with students and staff to emphasise the broader role we all have to play in bringing our nation closer together in the true spirit of Reconciliation. The College's planned activities are outlined here: National Reconciliation Week activities letter
The State Government has lifted the mandate on mask-wearing by students and staff in schools from Monday May 30, however, Rostrevor College fully supports those individuals who wish to continue wearing masks, which is still being encouraged by the State's Chief Public Health Officer. Mask wearing will be implemented when significant case numbers arise in a single classroom as described here: Mask Rule Changes letter
It was a great experience last week for five Year 12 students as they attended Government House to receive Merit certificates for SACE subjects they undertook while in Year 11. Congratulations to Sebastian Rapuano (3 Merits), Ridheypreet Grover, Anton Piotto, Darcy McKenny and Jonathan Beltrame.
Rostrevor's Year 11 Legal Studies students joined Old Scholar, the Hon Vincent Tarzia MP ('04), at Parliament House yesterday where they gained a greater insight into parliamentary representation and democratic and government processes. Thanks go to Mrs Robinson and Mr Pezos for facilitating the visit and to Mr Tarzia for hosting the young men.
Rostrevor's MY/SY Swimming Team, featuring several new competitors, plunged confidently into the State Aquatic Centre pool last night against the strongest competition they have faced in several years. Despite depleted numbers due to illness and injury, the team finished a respectable 7th in the state, with some strong individual performances. Congratulations to U15 swimmer Tom Braunack who won his signature event - the 50m Breaststroke - which he has dominated for several years. Zac Guth was another standout swimmer on the night, while Year 12s Luke Thoday and Marcus Pipicella gave their all in their final swim for the College. Thanks go to Swim Coach Jack Myers, manager Mr Whitefield and the many Rostrevor parents who supported the event and the boys.
On Wednesday, our Receptions and Year 2s read the same book (Family Tree) as two million schoolchildren around Australia in the National Simultaneous Storytime. The young students sat alongside Resource Centre Coordinator Ms Jessica Hogan as the storytime session was beamed into libraries and classrooms around the country in a celebration of reading.
Rostrevor's Specialist Soccer Program and its First XI and Second XI teams are benefitting from the College's investment in professional video equipment usually reserved for professional soccer clubs. The Veo sports camera technology is being used to support Soccer Coordinator Mr Mullen's Year 10 and 11 Specialist Soccer Program lessons and is also being used to record and review the matches played by Rostrevor's top soccer teams.
Congratulations to the First XI this week, which had an impressive 3 - 1 win over a previously unbeaten St Peter's College. Congratulations to Fabian D'Alessio who made his debut and to goal kickers captain David Preka, Nicholas Malatesta and Gabe Bowering (who scored his first XI goal). To view some great images by Old Scholar Claude Beltrame ('78) visit Rostrevor vs St Peter's May 2022
Football fans can tune in to Channel 7's Crows Show at 12:30pm tomorrow (Sat May 28) to see an interview with 2021 graduate and AFL Draft prospect Max Michalanney and his Norwood-legend father Mr Jim Michalanney ('72). Max, who is not only in the Crows Academy (Father/Son), but the AFL Academy and State U18 Squad, had the great opportunity to play in Melbourne last week against the Collingwood Academy team. The Rostrevor talent doesn't stop there with Max's brother Jack Michalanney and Julius Piro (both in Year 10) also part of the Crows Academies program under the guidance of Crows Academies Coach and Old Scholar Jack Hombsch ('10).
Six Players Debut for First XVIII
Rostrevor took it up to a strong Sacred Heart side last week in a gritty battle that went SHC’s way 78 - 63. Well done to debutants Matthew Brown, Darci Best, Ben Spehr, Orlando Turner, Darcy Kelly and Damon Stepic who were presented with their First XVIII guernseys by Principal Shana Bennett. Beau Baldwin was also presented with the No 1 Captain’s guernsey.

Well done to the Year 8 soccer team on a high-scoring match on home turf against Sacred Heart College last weekend. It was a great battle between the two sides which ultimately went Rostrevor's way 5 - 4.
These small wattle trees have taken an amazing journey into space and back as seeds and have now landed in their final home - Rostrevor's Nature Trail beneath the Ag Farm. In 2020, a group of Year 6 students, under the guidance of Ms Edwards, signed up to the project which saw a batch of seeds sent to the International Space Station for 6 months and then return to Rostrevor where they were propagated alongside a control batch of seeds that had remained on Earth. This week, a group of Year 10s planted several of the plants - noting that the Space Wattles had not grown as well as their Earth-based counterparts. The College will continue to track the plants' progress and will continue to provide data to the One Giant Leap Foundation as part of a national experiment.
It was a great contest between Gurr and O'Brien Houses in the Inter-House basketball competition in Purton Hall at lunchtime today with Gurr House securing the bragging rights for the Middle Years 32 - 21. On Monday, our Senior Years teams from Webb and Gurr Houses line up against each other for their grand final (gold coin donation for entry). Well done to the Prefects and referee Mr Steel on an exciting event which is also raising money for Edmund Rice Camps.
Today, our Year 5 and 6 students participated in Crossing Monitor Training by Road Safety Educators from the SA Police Road Safety Section. The training involved learning how to safely stop vehicles at a school crossing and performing safety assessments on when it is safe for people to cross the road. The session also included safe sign handling techniques and positioning within the crossing. This training is an important part of student leadership in the Junior Years and helps to provide a safe crossing and good road-safety role models.
It was a wonderful turnout at this week's Principal's Tour, led by Mrs Shana Bennett and supported by our Prefects and Vice Captains. As many year levels have reached capacity, or are nearing capacity for 2023, existing Rostrevor families are encouraged to submit sibling-enrolment paperwork to Enrolments Officer Annemarie Mein as soon as possible for 2024.
It has been a great start for Rostrevor's new OSHC service with 35 families taking advantage of the engaging and enjoyable program led by Director Steve Calio. Parents are reminded that OSHC also offers a before-school session from 7am to 8:30am and that students are not permitted on campus until a supervising teacher is present from 8:15am. See the College OSHC webpage here
